Alienware Area 51 m15x Reviews
Summary of review published by PC Magazine — August, 2008
Alienware puts the “alien” concept right into your notebook with its Area-51 m15x. Opting to go for simple, the m15x doesn’t have any fancy graphics covering the whole system, or even over-the-top paint jobs. Instead, the reviewer stated that the frame is reminiscent of a perfectly appointed briefcase and the laptop's solid silver treatment is reminiscent of some of the world's most luxurious automobiles. It uses color-shifting LEDs to outline certain areas of the system, such as the touchpad and the power button. While some hardcore gaming systems can go as heavy as 10 pounds, the 15.4-inch widescreen in the m15x helped reduce its weight to a manageable 7.8 pounds. Despite the relatively small screen size, it has an ultrasharp 1,920-by-1,200 resolution and supports the full 1080p format. Performance tests saw the m15X flexing its muscles, securing the best scores among gaming laptops on Adobe Photoshop CS3, CineBench R10, and Windows Media Encoding tests. It also features what it calls "BinaryGFX" - technology that allows the user to switch between Intel's 965GM integrated graphics and nVidia GeForce 8800M GTX. While the system is blazing fast, battery endurance is quite weak, draining completely in just 1 hour 49 minutes. Despite the whopping $4,499 tag price, the design and the power of the Alienware Area-51 m15x make it worth every cent.
Pros:
-excellent performance
-has the best discrete graphics card available
-portable for a gaming laptop
-sleek and stylish design
Cons:
-very expensive

The Alienware Area-51 m15x is currently the most powerful 15.4-inch gaming notebook in the market. Combining the power of Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 processor and Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX graphics, the m15x screams serious gaming. This notebook is not for the budget conscious ones either, with a tag price of close to five grand. The reviewer noted that the display of the m15x feels larger than 15.4 inches, though it still collects glare. During bench testing, the reviewer found the 3DMark06 to be the highest among all notebooks they have tested. Other bench test figures show the power under the hood of the m15x. During actual gaming, the scores garnered by the m15x was testament of the power of the notebook. However, when it came to test for battery life, the number wasn’t pretty. It only lasted 1 hour and 51 minutes during the battery-rundown tests. Another caveat of the m15x are the speakers that comes with the notebook. The reviewer stated that it was not loud enough for their tastes and that blasting at full volume will cause the left speaker to squeak. For serious gamers looking for the best, the Alienware Area-51 m15x should be on the top of the list.
Pros:
-Extreme performance
-Great graphics performance
-Extremely fast processor
-Customizable
Cons:
-Low end speakers
-Very short battery life
