Touted as the de facto image-editing program for graphics professionals, Adobe Photoshop comes out with a new version: the new Photoshop CS4. Aside from costing serious bucks, the Photoshop CS4 has some steep requirements such as a graphics board with at least 256MB of onboard RAM and 4 to 8GB of RAM for good performance. The reviewer noted that the slight interface changes are quite intelligent, with frequently used commands made much more accessible. On the other hand, the Help has been changed to take you online to a Support page that isn’t well organized. There are also improvements on the editing tools such as the Dodge, Burn, and Sponge tools. Support for OpenGL makes altering your view a whole lot smoother with CS4. The reviewer also stated that Adobe had gone one more step toward better integration of Photoshop with its sister program, Lightroom, with CS4’s Camera RAW 5 plugin. For those who work with 3D, video, and numbering visual features in scientific images, there is the Photoshop CS4 Extended, though the reviewer suggests trying the trial version first. All in all, the decision to upgrade may just depend on how you use Photoshop. If the upgrades greatly affect your way of working, you might want to check it out. Just make sure you have a system that has enough muscle to run the new Photoshop CS4.
