Adium Instant Messaging Software Reviews

Summary of review published by Laptop Magazine — September, 2008

Mac users who aren’t fond of the idea of having several instant messaging clients have another option: Adium. Setting up is as easy as downloading the 20.8MB file. During the course of the installation, Adium will ask for your various instant messenger usernames and passwords, then log you in immediately. It supports just about every messenger client available: AIM, Apple Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber, LiveJournal Talk, Lotus Sametime, MobileMe, MSN Messenger, MySpace IM, Novell Groupwise, QQ, and Yahoo. Contacts appear in a single, highly-customizable buddy list. If a contact has more than one IM account, it will be merged into a single entity. Hovering over a contact will launch a pop-up window showing all their IM clients. Adium allows the user to send files and links to contacts. However, the reviewer noted that there’s no way to send e-mails directly from the client. Adium doesn’t currently support voice or video chatting either. On the other hand, there are also numerous plug-ins available that extend the functionality of Adium. For Mac users whose needs in a multi-network IM client is basic, the Adium and its list of compatible IM clients might just do the trick.
Pros:
-supports all major IM services
-plug-ins available
-tabbed chat windows
Cons:
-Mac OS X only
-no audio/video chat support
