For users who can’t part with their home theater sound system, Acoustic Research introduces the ARW200 USB 5.1 surround sound headphones. It comes in a compact, lightweight, foldable design and includes a protective carrying case. The design, however, looks cheap and fragile. The AWR200 requires almost no setup for PC users. Just plug it into your USB port, set your player for 5.1 audio, and you’re good to go. The reviewer noted that despite the flimsy appearance, the ARW200 delivered strong audio performance. Thanks to the center channel, the surround, and the subwoofer speakers of the earpieces, off-screen voices sounded as if they were coming from behind. Playing non-5.1 channel music sounded good as well, though the reviewer stated that the headphones sounded the best with 5.1 sound. However, the AWR200 lacks noise cancellation and the small earcups aren’t enough to block noise, managing only to barely muffle nearby sounds. If you are in a relatively quiet environment, the good 5.1-channel surround sound and ease of setup of the Acoustic Research’s AWR200 headphones might appeal to you.
