A relatively newcomer in the arena of optical character recognition, the Abbyy FineReader Professional 9.0 puts some pressure on its long-established competitor, OminPage, in some significant areas. FineReader makes an excellent first impression by providing an interface that combines straightforward clarity for basic tasks, and clear explanations of complex tasks. It puts as many options as possible on a large-scale toolbar that resembles the Ribbon in Microsoft Office 2007. The reviewer also noted that FineReader proved generally more informative than OmniPage about its operations. Testing their automated features, both FineReader and OmniPage made roughly the same number of mistakes in reading the scanned newspaper text. Unlike OmniPage, FineReader offered 3 other panes to ease the process of proofreading. The proofreading pane also suggested a more useful list of possible alternative readings than OmniPage. However, the reviewer noted that while FineReader trumps OmniPage in certain areas, it's important to remember that FineReader has a shallower feature-set and lesser skill at making sense of the layout in complicated pages from magazines and design-heavy press-releases. Overall, the Abbyy FineReader Professional 9.0 is an excellent choice if your job requires text extraction and trouble-free operation.
