AT&T Option GT Ultra Express 3G Modem Reviews

Summary of review published by Laptop Magazine — January, 2009

If you’re on a tight budget and looking for a 3G modem, the AT&T Option GT Ultra Express 3G modem is offered for free with a two-year contract. The Ultra Express measures 3.7 inches in length which is longer than most ExpressCard units. This translates to more of the unit sticking out of the slot. To test the Ultra Express, the reviewer tried it on the 21st floor of a Manhattan building. The GT Ultra Express couldn’t find a 3G signal at all. When it finally did, the reviewer noted that Web site tests timed out after a minute and a half, and the download and upload speeds were terribly slow. At New York’s Penn Station, the GT Ultra Express’ performance improved greatly. It had an excellent upload speed rate of 740 Kbps, but only had a 619 Kbps download speed. At Long Beach, the Ultra Express downloaded a 25MB file at a rate of 1 Mbps and uploaded a file at 1.3 Mbps. However, the reviewer stated that the Ultra Express had trouble connecting to the network, even after multiple tries. Despite being free and having good upload and download speeds, the connection problems of the AT&T Option GT Ultra Express 3G modem might just be the deal-breaker.
Pros:
-free
-fastest underground download speed

Cons:
-hard to connect even in 3G areas
-worst performer in office test
