The P527 is Asus first stab in the realm of smart phones. It offers a touchscreen display, a 2-MP camera, Windows Mobile 6 and GPS capability. Being a quad-band phone, this unit can be used in the USA as well as overseas. It features a brushed aluminum finish along with a 2.6-inch display capable of displaying 240 x 320-resolution. Instead of offering a full QWERTY keyboard, ASUS went for the alphanumeric keypad which the reviewer noted to be cramped. While the phone’s OS is the dull Windows Mobile 6, it has the ASUS launcher, providing the user with a unique, but sluggish, interface. The P527 allows for data connection using its 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and EDGE data networks, though missing is the 3g option. The included camera performed poorly under tests as images were washed out and had dull colors. Calls made with the P527 were generally good. The reviewer noted that the other party sounded clear and there were no interruptions or static during a call. Battery life isn’t spectacular, as the unit needed charging every night. Overall, the P527’s lack in performance isn’t enough to keep up with the big boys of smart phones.
