Io HD’s launch coincided with Apple’s introduction of two new video codecs, the ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 HQ, both providing virtually lossless 10-bit HD 4:2:2 compression at SD footage file sizes. With Io HD allows external capture and real-time conversion to these two codecs and other HD variants in a portable device via FireWire 800. The reviewer illustrates its various possible uses thru real world examples. In his view, the ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 HQ will be popular codecs in the near future, making AJA’s Io HD a worthy investment. He praises its portability, flexibility and output quality. While aware that it’s far from flawless, the reviewer gives it his highest recommendation.
