While it may not win any hearts for beauty, the 3ware Sidecar makes up for its lack in aesthetics with performance, sturdy construction, data security and versatility. The 3ware Sidecar is meant to hold 4 SATA I or II drives that can carry up to 1TB drives per bay. One advantage of getting a pre-configured system is the minimum amount of work the user has to exert. The Sidecar comes with the drives already installed. Configuration is pretty straightforward: just install the card and drivers and the RAID will then be mounted. It comes with a software utility meant to control everything about the RAID. You can either go for 4 drives in a RAID, or 3 drives plus a hot spare - something which the reviewer recommended due to security. Benchmark scores produced a very respectable 208.3MB/s write and a read rate of 237.9MB/s. However, while the scores theoretically support 1080i60 10-bit uncompressed, it was unable to play a clip without dropped frames. Users working with uncompressed or even 2K environments might want to look at other options. On the other hand, the 3ware Sidecar certainly delivers speed and capacity.
